Clinical Supervision
Clinical Supervision is a specific service required for Licensed Master Level Social Workers (LMSW’s) to pursue higher Licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Components of effective supervision include:
Development of a collaborative supervisory relationship or alliance between supervisor and supervisee that is collegial, respectful, and trusting; emphasizing both supervisor and supervisee self reflection and self assessment
Supervision Contract that explicitly states informed consent and roles and responsibilities of supervisee and supervisor
Together the dyad identifies both strengths and abilities, and areas of lesser competence, frames these as goals and tasks, and implements the learning cycle to engage in reflective practice and improve competency
Systematic and ongoing feedback to the supervisee anchored towards goals, assessments, and evaluation, with attention to legal, ethical and regulatory standards, ethical problem solving, professionalism and self care
Supervision emphasizes lifelong learning, acknowledges that competence is not an end point but instead the foundation and entry point professional development that will continue through one’s career.
